Haunted Kansas: Ghost Stories and Other Eerie Tales

A Nocturnal View of the Sunflower State-- A MUST READThere is something to be said about Kansas. People passing through the state on I-70 or I-35 rarely glimpse Kansas, after dark, as this author reveals. "City Folk" shudder at being lost in the middle of nowhere. This wonderful book is the start of something out here. With that said, I invite you to Kansas. Enter freely, and of your own free will...

Hayseeds, Moralizers, and Methodists: The Twentieth-Century Image of Kansas
Published in Hardcover by Univ Pr of Kansas (June, 1988)
Average review score:

KANSAS-A FORGOTTEN STATE OF MIND...Few Americans now living can recall the impact and import of the "view from Kansas" from the mid 1800's up to the Great Depression. Modern Americans know little of the Sunflower State other than that the residents there are reasonably quiet and keep pretty much to themselves. It might be hard to imagine that at one time to say one was from Kansas would be the equivalent of saying "I'm a Texan," nowadays.
Kansan's were (and are) noted for their hard work, common sense pioneer spirit and an inate sense of fair play. Bader's book takes us step by step through the state's stormy start, as "Bleeding Kansas," and its major role in the War Between the States, through its phase as a policy maker and trend-setter up to modern times when Kansas is perhaps best known as the home state of former U. S. Senator, Bob Dole.
Surprisingly engaging and ultimately very "readable," this book is a must-read for anyone with a bent for Americana and U. S. history.

Hometown Beer - A History of Kansas City's Breweries
Published in Hardcover by Omega Innovative Marketing (11 October, 1999)
Average review score:

Excellent historical account of the beer industry in KCThis book was informative and enjoyable to read. The pictures are a huge plus. I now have a much better understanding of how the beer industry in Kansas City contributed to the success of the city. After completing this book, I could hardly get myself to the bar quickly enough to have a pint of Boulevard unfiltered wheat. And, it was great!

The Inhabited Prairie
Published in Hardcover by Univ Pr of Kansas (September, 1998)
Average review score:

The Full Color OZDon Worster once again intertwines his artful use of words with the photographic mastery of Terry Evans to make The Inhabited Prairie a true masterpiece in landscape narrative. The writing, reminiscent of John McPhee, shows professor Worster's love of his native Kansas landscapes. Furthermore, the photography of Evans superbly depicts the Kansas landscape and prairie mixed with the marks of the modern world. From aerial shots of Stan Herd's monumental crop canvases to the ruins of days gone by, Evans & Worster collaborated to expose the natural beauty of a uniquely beautiful state. A pleasant read that should occupy sitting room tables across Kansas and the Great Plains.

Kansas (Celebrate the States, Set 8)
Published in Library Binding by Benchmark Books (April, 2000)
Average review score:

I feel now that I know KansasKansas displays a writing technique, which is concise, but yet not so that it doesn't allow the author's comments to create a side line interest to over ride any thoughts of becoming bored by reading historical nonfiction.
It certainly does the job of describing Kansas from its beginning to the present day.

Great reference for any die-hard Chief's fanI purchased this book for a quite dedicated chiefs fan and he was overwhelmed with all the facts, details, and history that is contained within this book. It is easy to find the fact that you are looking for because the book is well organized. There are many photos (B&W) throughout the book with a special color section in the middle. A great addition to any KC Chiefs fan's library.

The Kansas City Marvels: The FBI Briefcase
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (April, 2002)
Average review score:

The Kansas City Marvels: The FBI BriefcaseThis is a very believable group of characters in a timely and innovative story. I suspect most of us know or have met a group of kids who could easily be this gang. A good example of kids who are left pretty much to their own devices, gather into a "family" of choice, have fun and do rather well... most of the time. Fast paced with good description of characters and settings. If I was in KC and drove out to the airport, I think I could probably find the places described to the readers. The writer is creative and apparently is knowledgeable about kids and food preparation. There are a few "rough" words, but have you listened to the majority of real kids lately? Interesting villain, hope to meet again in a future story about the KC Marvels and their adventures. Got the book for my grandkids. I opened it up and just had to read it before I sent it off. Both adults and about 11,12 yrs and over will enjoy this

The Kansas City Marvels: The Mafia, the Fbi, the Diamonds
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (February, 2003)
Average review score:

Those KC Marvels are at it again in 2nd book of series! The second of The Kansas City Marvels series continues with the adventures of nine fatherless kids who form a baseball team to play local Little Leagues on their own baseball diamond west of Kansas City International Airport. Sam and Nickki found a top-secret briefcase belonging to a missing FBI agent in the first book and solved an important FBI/Mafia case. That was just the beginning! The kids are both case rescuers and antagonists to the local FBI agents. A position they treasure, and relish. The Marvels have a big advantage over the FBI. They can move about the city freely. And spy on Mafia figures, and on their illegal activities without arousing suspicion. And the FBI doesn't let the ages of the Marvels prevent them from demanding the kid's assistance. They send them on stakeouts and information gathering excursions, often putting the kids in life-threatening danger. It isn't the entire fault of the FBI. The Kansas City Marvels are used to directing their own lives. Their leader, Samuel B. Jenkins, willingly takes his band of young detectives on wave after wave of exciting nighttime excursions into the Mafia underground. Look for more adventures of The Kansas City Marvels.
